Episode 23: Dirty White Boy / Nothin’ But a Good Time

It’s time for some songs about guys being dudes as Vintown and Sammerz cover two of the greatest songs of all time: “Dirty White Boy” by Foreigner and “Nothin’ But a Good Time” by Poison!

We start off with “Dirty White Boy”. Did you know this song is called “Dirty White Boy”? Seriously, how did that happen? We get into some song meanings (more like wrong meanings), the album cover that made the Bible Belt mad, something called “crypto-racism”, and more.

The YouTube comments for this one features a sweet old lady named Peggy who really loves this song. Also, a baby named after cocaine? Only in the YouTube comments!

The show then makes its way to Poison’s 1988 classic, “Nothin’ But a Good Time” and talk about the song’s working class roots, Poison vs. Motley Crue, the classic music video, hockey, and Yogi Bear. (No picnic baskets were harmed in the making of this section.)

You want comments? We got comments! Lots of drug talk, annoying wives, a guy talking management’s side in a Poison video, and the dastardly Kirk Cobain is to blame for all of it.

Dudes rock and so does this episode.

Episode 22: The Real O.C. – “Come Clean” & “Unwritten”

Vintown and Sammerz head to the early 2000s for two of the greatest songs of all time: “Come Clean” by Hilary Duff and “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield!

That’s right, y’all, it’s a Laguna Beach/The Hills theme song episode.

We start off with Hilary Duff’s theme song for Laguna, “Come Clean”. We go back, back to the beginning, to talk about the writing of this song and the music video before engaging in some Lyrics Talk. Plus, Sammerz makes her musical debut.

The YouTube comments are all over the place on this one with some really upset Disney adults. Plus, Vince’s pitch for the Lifetime Original Movie: Come Clean.

The theme song for The Hills and one of the most inspirational songs of a generation is next, “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. We talk about her writing this song for her brother, her brother’s hit song, and their sister who I bet you didn’t know they had.

The YTC features our Metalhead of the Week, a heated discussion on whether or not Natasha is an Alanis ripoff, alarm clocks, and much more.

A fun episode about some trash TV theme songs.

Episode 21: Carlton/Branch ’22 – “Everywhere” & “A Thousand Miles”

Vintown and Sammerz head back to the early 2000s for two of the greatest songs of all time: “Everywhere” by Michelle Branch and “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton”!

The show starts off with talk about Michelle Branch’s “Everywhere” which she wrote when she was only 15! The only thing we were writing at that age were letters to our parole officers.

The YouTube commenters love this song as it takes them back to a simpler time before adulting and social media killed everything. A time when music was about more than ASS.

Our second song is “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. You know, that song from White Chicks. There’s a lot to talk about here from the celebrity she wrote this about, Stephan Jenkins, MTV censorship, Stephan Jenkins, Whoppa Wit Da Choppa, Stevie Nicks, and more.

There are plenty of comments on this one to unpack, including a special segment called “Sam, Are Men Okay?” The answer may surprise you. (It won’t.)

A banger episode about two banger songs.

Episode 20: Jagged Little Pill 25

The Music Was Better crew took a field trip to the Alanis Morissette concert and now they’re here to talk about it.

The show starts off with “You Oughta Know”, that song that everyone thinks they know who it’s about. Well, guess what? You don’t and we’re sick of hearing about it! Why would you even want this song to be about you anyway? Hey, it’s me, the abusive dickbag from. Cool, I guess?

The comment section is loaded with jagged little pills, including a dad who used this song to teach his son a lesson about how to treat women. That’s pretty nice. The only song my parents ever played for me was “Helter Skelter”. They said it was about some kind of prophecy their friend Charlie told them about? I don’t know, I wasn’t really paying much attention.

We follow up that angry song with a happier one, “Head Over Feet”. Not much facts out there about this one, but the song is a banger. Nobody wants to talk about happy songs anymore.

The YouTube comments are filled with the exact kind of people you’d think would be in there. Mostly men who are not okay.

Grab a glass of water and swallow down this jagged little pill of an episode.

Episode 19: The Warrior / Love is a Battlefield

“Warrior”? “Battlefield”? What is this, some kind of war propaganda? Because that is not okay. Umm, war is bad? Like, seriously…

No, silly, it’s two of the best songs of the 1980s and Vintown and Sammerz are here to talk all about them. This week we’re covering “The Warrior” by Scandal (aka the Patty Smyth band) and “Love is a Battlefield” by the great Pat Benatar!

The show starts off with talk about 1984’s “The Warrior” by Scandal. We talk about the song’s writers, the great Holly Knight and Nick Glider; her writing process, the band’s demise shortly after this song hit, stereo jungle child, the classic music video, and Netflix’s GLOW.

We then dive into the YouTube comments section where this song is great for talent shows, but bad for bodybuilding competitions. It does sound great when driving a Datsun 280ZX though. Plus, a guy who is really into a BatMan/WWF crossover.

Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield” is our second song of the show. It is also written by the great Holly Knight along with Mike Chapman. Their songwriting process is covered here as well as their anger at Neil Giraldo’s re-arranging of the song. Something they conveniently dropped when the song became a huge hit. Funny how that works. Hashtag capitalism. The music video is another all-timer so you know we’re talking about that too.

The comment section asks a very important question that we all should be asking ourselves: why world not like when this song come out? why world hard now and no mall? Plus, True Blood talk, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, having thoughts, and an expert in feelings. Good times!

Listen up. This might just be one of our best episodes to date.

Episode 18: Walking on Sunshine / Walking on Broken Glass

The Music Was Better Summer Salebration continues with an episode dedicated to one of our favorite summer pastimes: walking! One foot in front of the other, y’all!

Specifically, “Walking on Sunshine” (Vintown) and “Walking on Broken Glass” (Sammerz)!

We started off with what Vintown calls one of the happiest songs ever, Katrina & The Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine”. We talk about how the band really wanted to be Velvet Underground, the insane amount of money the song makes, Hurricane Katrina (more like hurricane tortilla), and the numerous covers of the song.

The YouTube Comments (YTC) will make you as happy as a dog when it gets to walk, including someone mad about comparisons to Starship’s “Built This City”, a 14-year-old that wants to be reborn, and a questioning of reality itself.

Sammerz’ pick is up next, Annie Lennox’s 1992 hit, “Walking on Broken Glass”. We dig into Diva, if this song is a personal one, Annie’s problematic character, and the star studded music video. Hey, is that Dr. House I see? I bet he’d diagnose this segment: very informative!

The YTC for this song has some real gems. From Vivian’s boring dream to Thomas’ woke anthem to Robert’s rage against music videos, the comments really are like that shoe that fits just right.

So, what are you waiting for? Pop on your walking shoes and take this episode around the block. Your feet (and your ears) will thank you.

Episode 17: Third Eye Blind – “Semi-Charmed Life” & “How’s It Going To Be”

Vintown and Sammerz are back to talk about two of Third Eye Blind’s biggest hits: “Semi-Charmed Life” and “How’s It Going To Be”! We did a ton of research for this as we even went and watched the concert live. Anything for our listeners.

We start off with “Semi-Charmed Life”, the crystal meth anthem that either nobody or everyone knows is about that. We talk about the lyrics, radio censorship, and 2000’s The Tigger Movie.

The comment section here are a wonderful thing with people who don’t understand drugs, people who don’t understand English, moms who dgaf about their kids, and the peak of human civilization.

There aren’t a ton of facts to dig into on “How’s It Going To Be” so we instead read some interview quotes about 3EB lead singer, Stephan Jenkins. He seems like a really cool guy!

The YTC for “How’s It Going To Be” is pretty crazy. (Nice rhyme.) Breakups, divorce, infidelity, and the end of the world.

Listen if you like songs that are good or comments that are bad.

Episode 16: California Girls, Part 2

It wouldn’t be summer without a sequel that nobody asked for.

Apparently, there are some “California Girls” songs that we forgot about last week so Vintown and Sammerz are coming at you with a sequel to talk all about them.

The first one is David Lee Roth’s cover of the Beach Boys classic. We talk about his decision to go solo, the song’s success in comparison to other Van Halen songs, the Crazy from the Heat EP, and more.

We delve into the YouTube comment section of a VHS rip of “California Girls”. Things start off okay with your run of the mill stoners and admirers of Dave’s fighting skills, but then things take a turn for the worse with Katy Perry haters, racists, and liars? Oh my.

Our second song is Gretchen Wilson’s “California Girls”, a song that neither of us knew existed until earlier this week. Honestly, it was better that way, but we talk about it anyway. There isn’t much out there about this one so we even delve into Gretchen’s experiences in Plane Hell.

The comment section is filled with people who don’t quite get that the song isn’t that serious and they are mad as hell about it. Plus, an appearance from Gretchen herself?! No way!

Get more California Girls than you ever wanted by listening to this episode.

Episode 15: California Girls

It’s time to kick off the summer and what better way to do that than listening to Vintown and Sammerz talk about some “California Girls.”

We kick the episode off by going back to 1965 and talking about the original “California Girls” by the Beach Boys. We talk about the song’s acid-fueled writing, Brian Wilson’s shitty dad, the song’s influence on Paul McCartney, and it’s ranking among the greatest songs of all time.

The comment section is filled with insightful comments and insights like “California girls not hot anymore” and “woke people no like girls no more”.

We follow that song up with the greatest of all California Girl songs, “California Gurls” by Katy Perry! We have some great quotes from Katy on how she came to write the song and how she ended up choosing Snoop Dogg for a guest spot. Plus, racist radio stations!?

The YTC on this one exists just to make us feel old. There’s also a bunch of people complaining that the lyrics/music video may have been PG-13. Heaven forbid!

A fun episode and return to form from a couple of big ol’ KatyCats.

Episode 14: Stranger Things Soundtrack

Get ready to kill off Barb with Vintown and Sammerz as they talk about two of the biggest songs from Netflix’s Stranger Things: “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush and “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” by The Clash.

The show starts with talk about “Running Up That Hill” which has become the biggest hit in Kate Bush’s career over the past week. (And they say Gen Z can’t do anything right.) We talk God, interpretive dance, Big Boi from Outkast, and the song’s incredible rise over the past two weeks.

We then delve into the YouTube comments where people really want you to know they heard this on Stranger Things. Hey, did I mention this song is on the new season of Stranger Things? Because it is. It’s on the new season of Stranger Things. However, some have been fans long before the show (Stranger Things) and they really want you to know that too.

The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” appeared on season one of Stranger Things so we talk about that next. We talk about the show’s writing, it’s Spanish background singing, Levi’s, One Direction, Rugrats, and this new show called Stranger Things. Have you heard of it? It’s really good.

The show closes out with a delve into the YouTube comments of The Clash’s hit where people are really frickin’ bent that you discovered this song from a show instead of the old fashioned way: being born a long time ago. These commenters gots to go, y’all.

A fun episode about a crazy new show on Netflix. Listen between your next binge session of Stranger Things.
